I was thinking $700. The case is a server case with 7 hotswap scsi bays and weighs a ton. The MB is new, never been used. I'm actually in the process or putting it in the case, since I sold the old 860chipset based MB.

But for $700 I would imagine you can get a kick ass P4 system.

It would run as a single 4.0GHz if the software can take advantage of dual processors (actually quad since they each have HyperThreading). I'm now sure which programs take advantage of it, but I do know when I used PS7 on the Xeon system, it was super fast. Same with video editing and encoding.
Hmmmm.....gonna have to think about that for a minute because it is really tempting.

Would games take advantage of that as well because I want to do a little gaming occasionally also...not the main priority but it would be nice

Damn...just realized I stated a 3.2 when I meant a 3.4 processor

Honestly, I have no idea. I've been able to run games like Halo and Call of Duty at full 1280x1024 resolution with highest details with no problem. That is with my geforce2 MX440 with 64mb of ram.

I don't do much 3D FPS games as I get a serious headache when playing those games (except Halo for some strange reason).

Abit rocks.

3.4ghz are at the top of the barrel right now so you're going to pay a premium for them. If you drop back to a 3.2ghz or even a 3ghz you can save a good bit of money and probably not notice a big diffrence.

I'm just putting together a P4 2.4A system with 512mb Dual Channel DDR400, in comparison to my current machine, this thing flys! It's a huge increase in speed, I'm so jealous, it's not for me

If I had the money right now, I'd got with a setup like this:

CPU http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...116-184&depa=1
Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...127-180&depa=0
RAM (I'd get 2 of these kits) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...144-148&depa=1

This would be about $830 just for those 3. That's all I'd need, I don't know if you plan on getting a new case, hard drive, video card, etc etc etc.
I'd probably look around for a better than stock heatsink/fan... so add about $20-60 for that.

What he said. If you're gonna build one now, might as well get one with PCI-Express.

oh good point.

with PCI-Express you will need a new video card. AGP's won't work anymore.
