i'm trying to keep it around $150 tops. i don't really hammer away with video editing. i mostly use the pc for internet, light graphic design, sound editing, and spreadsheets.

my goal is to get a new MB/Chip, case, fan and max out the memory for $300.
I'm in the same boat as you. Heres what I came up with so far. Still looking for a good deal on P4 tho.

just spend the same amount you spent 5 years ago on your athalon 950mhz and you'll have a kick ass system (compared to your 950)

I build my girlfriend a little SFF box with an Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton 512k cache core) and an Nforce2 chipset with a 512M stick of DDR400 Cruical memory and I like that thing (it's eventually going to be a PVR system). It's actually pretty damn quick and very stable. I was actually pretty impressed by the speed considering it's age. I think the chip was ~$80 and the memory was the same (newegg). If you want something little for an upgrade, I'd recommend that. If your looking for a little more futureproof, go with an Athlon64 chip though.
