by the way, i did both of these tweaks, ran timedemo with and without, and the avg. framerate didn't change... :dunno:

The tweak works (the config one). Really well for me anyway. But how do I keep Doom 3 from devouring my memory? I play it fine, silky smooth but it just steadily consumes more and more memory till it closes apparently. Why? How do I stop it?

well, i picked up another stick of 512MB. i'm at 1GB now. the tweak worked. i picked up i think ~3 avg. fps on the timedemo. i figured it had something to do with the ram, or lack of.

I'm running it at 1024x780 at High detail and I get no lag at all. I might up the resolution to see if it can handle that.

AMD Athlon64 2500+ @ 1.8gHz
1gig of mem.
128 ATI Radeon 9800 pro

hmm.. i ran the timedemo again after everything had cached, before and after the config file change, and avg. fps came out the same again. so maybe this change just makes a difference when things cache? i don't know. anyway, whatever. the game runs great, and that's what matters.
