the standard MS one, blows.

Boingo blows

PCtel roaming client is awsome, but it costs money and my trial ran out, and I can't crack it.

What do you use?

I'm no help. I don't need software. It's been built into Mac OS since version 9 and is free. It works great.

If I were you, I'd use the ones that shipped with your wireless adapter.

Most reasonable wireless cards don't require software. Sometimes software comes with your wireless router so you can communicate with it via the administrative end of it, but that's it. Kind of like Will's.

Or you can buy an Apple and just have it all nice and built in.

I have never needed software to access a wireless network. What is it the original poster's trying to do that he feels limited by software?

You really don't need software to access the router, either. Every router I've ever seen can be directly addressed via an HTTP address through a computer hard wired to the router, and them proprietary HTML aides in the programming of the router.
