As for using a small turbo instead, they'd still have similar production costs. The engines would have to be redesigned, more piping, different fuel management, etc. If they had started as building turbo cars from the beginning, then it might be similar production costs. But to change now, would be expensive.
Look at it this way. If VTEC was so overrated, then why are so many companies trying to incorporate variable valve timing into their engines?

going from an LS motor to a GSR motor was incredible for me. however, i tire of things quickly - i'm tired of having to rev the shit out it to get some good speed.

It wasn't the first. Alfa had used it before back in the 60's or the 70's
