Default help fixing labtop and network?

its a inspiron 2500 bought refurbished in 2001
running w2kpro and some viruses and spywares probably
last format was less than 1 yrs ago i think
on saturday it was running fine and starting yesterday it wouldnt access internet or lan

so far i can get a list of servers for winamp library and i can scan that labtop with languard
now im out of ideas

some weird ip
not the one assigned to the port
when i have it use that ip tho it still doesnt work

it should be 192.168.1.102 255.255.255.0
but its 169.254.157.29 255.255.0.0

you're getting the generic IP...

I don't remember how to fix it. sometimes ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew will fix it...

I forgot the other method.

yea i got that generic xp IP also when my internet or whatever crapped out. i did the /release and /renew...and resetted my router...and then it worked. dont know if that did it, or if it was luck. but i no longer have that generic 169 ip.

i already tried /release
All adaptors bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and can not be released

try giving it a static ip
