Side Bar: I gotta say the guys at Town North Mazda (Richardson, Tx) are the coolest
Dealer just let me drive anything I wanted, where ever I wanted, and didn't get at all upset when I redlined the Miata and the RX-8 (after suitable warmups, of course).
My dad got an RX-8 about a month and a half ago and just finished breaking it in. The only complaint so far is the notorious gas mileage...he says from 15-18 mpg with Premium Unleaded. :a:
OK now my review of the car:
- 4 speed
auto
- Sport Package with 18 inchers, Traction Control...I dunno what else.
Anyways, I've only driven it 3 times now so I'll just give my limited input. Acceleration is very seemless, as in u step on the gas without feeling much punch and a few seconds later you look down at the digital speedo and see you're 20 mph over the speed limit. In manual mode, there's a slight delay in shifting after u hit the stick or the paddle shifter. But the fun runs out quickly because of only 4 speeds; so if you get one, definitely choose the 6 Speed. Handling is very tight, very little roll in. Backseat room is plentiful for an average 5'8" guy, very easy to slip in from the back doors compared to my coupe.
Yeah that's all I got, and the RX-8 is the best car I've ever driven
h: so my opinion is very limited. Happy shopping.

Rotary engines are really cool. They like high revs and automatics aren't conducive to that. If you drive them around at low engine speeds and on short trips they tend to carbon up the apex seals. (rotary version of piston rings) Because of this people that drive them like minivans have the most problems with them. They need to be run hard at 5,000 rpm or more occasionally to keep them happy. I'm surprised Kai hasn't jumped into this thread yet.
Heres a little article comparing the 350z and the RX-8

Today, the Honda dealer quoted me $500 over invoice for a new 2K... time to start saving pennies I guess...
