Default Summer movie predictions...

As taken from my Xanga (www.xanga.com/thisguyphuong)

The passed blockbusters "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", "Shrek 2", and "Troy" were decent movies, Shrek 2 easily being the best out of the three. People gave almost impossible to live up to hype on the movie, but it delivered and I believe that it is on par with the original. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was yet another solid movie, but in my mind, it is not a great or excellent movie. The whole series always had decent character development, plot development, and just plain entertaining, but it is a little above average at best. "Troy" was rather disappointing, due to the fact that there was hardly any character development, but then again, it was a flaw in the book nonetheless. It was still an entertaining movie with excellent actours, but nothing beyond that.

This week gives birth to "The Notebook" and the controversial "Fahrenheit 9/11". I was surprised to see Ryan Gosling (the male protagionist in "The Notebook") because this is very unorthodox for his script roles. His last two movies that I have watched ("The Believer" and "The United States of Leland") has him in a role of an urban murderer and/or Jewish Nazi, so "The Notebook" be an awkward experience for me. The latter has already gotten all of the buzz needed, but I am worried that Michael Moore's ego will need to be fed like it was in "Bowling for Columbine". I like his movies, but some parts just makes me wonder if they were staged and/or manipulated.

Next Wednesday, is of course, "Spider Man 2", which will definately earn at least what the predecessor did in a 5-day opening weekend. I predict that this movie will shatter a box office recording for best opening weekend with at least $125 million, and probably a spot in the ten most money making movies of all time. If the director Sam Raimi struck to the comic-book and followed the same formula like last time, it is a guaranteed hit with the critics. "The Clearing" also opens on that day will veteran actours William Dafoe and Robert Redford. Just naming the actours alone will probably please the middle-aged crowd, and I will definately be seeing this movie for the actours alone.

Next Friday welcomes the sequel to the greatest modern romance flick, "Before Sunrise", named "Before Sunset". If you do not know anything about the original, I seriously recommend that you rent this movie. It is very talky, but that is where the gem of the movie is and what made it into such a great movie. The director claims that he had so much source material leftover from the original that it was enough for a sequel. I really cannot wait to see this movie. The actour Ethan Hawke and actress Julie Delpy are back, so strong acting is expected, too.

July 7th brings "King Arthur", in which I know will tank after a week or two. History and Jerry Bruckheimer do not mix, because it seems like Bruckheimer loves to make anachronistic movies; look at Pearl Harbor if you need an example. Also, instead of wasting your money seeing this movie, go rent "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" if you want to see a movie about the legend.

July 14th and 16th brings "I, Robot" and a few movies for the female teenagers. "I, Robot" will most likely be a blockbuster, because all of Will Smith's summer movies (Independance Day, Men in Black 1 & 2, Bad Boys II) were massive blockbuster, so I expect the same. "A Cinderella Story" comes out that week, but I highly doubt it will make a high amount of money. Hilary Duff's acting, along with singing, is to be avoided like the plague in my book.

July 23rd will have "The Bourne Supremacy", but I am uncertain if it will be a good movie or not. The original was a good, solid movie, but a sequel usually just means crap. "Catwoman" also comes out that weekend, but I doubt it will be a good movie. To me, it seems like Halle Berry sold out and does movies for the money now, but not for respect after winning her Oscar. Besides, most people will watch it because of a leather-clad Halle Berry; just rent "Swordfish" or "Monster's Ball" if you want to see more of Halle Berry, topless.

July 30th will be quite the day with "The Village" and "The Manchurian Candidate". "The Village' seems to be a bit of a wild card to me, but will probably bring in a nice amount of money, because the director is the one behind the hit, "The Sixth Sense". "The Manchurian Candidate" I expect will be a hit, provided that the screenplay is heavily reworked. The same plot is where, but must be updated to the current society, so who knows. The cast is excellent with Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, and Jon Voight, so acting is definately not a problem.

August 6th has "Collateral" with Tom Cruise as a villian character. I honestly do not know if this will be a decent movie, but Tom Cruise's track record as of late has been great, so I hope the same.

August 13th opens "Alien vs. Predator", which will probably be a hit, but not a blockbuster in my opinion. I do not expect it to be a good movie because of the director and how it is made for the fanboys. I expect the aliens to win because they have always been quite underrated.

August 20th finally brings the long delayed "Hero", in which I saw a year and a half ago at home. Miramax supposedly butchered half an hour off of this movie, so I expect it to have not so great reviews from other critics.
