That drive is actually a rebadged NEC 2500. It's one of the best drives out there buck for buck. If I were you, I'd flash it with NEC f/w, or with one of the new beta firmwares. www.cdfreaks.com has a dedicated NEC forum and some great firmware in there. I think v2beta5 is the newest f/w out for that drive, and it's supposed to work really good.

I've only burned 2 dvds with my nec 2500 w/ stock f/w so far, and haven't had any problems. Actually I have had great results. I scanned both dvds (ritek g04) for parity, my ParityInner Maxes were less than 20, and my ParityOuter maxes were both 4. So yea, it's a pretty smooth burner, and it's even better with upgraded firmware.

And btw, you will be able to burn dual layer when the time comes, as long as you have the right firmware.

it all depends on the guts. i have a cendyne box branded dvd writer, when i opened up the package and installed it, the bios said PIONEER DVR-A06. woot.
