Do you want a regular sized one or a pocket sized one?
For regular sized, you can get a Canon A80 for a hair over $300 and it's the business. If you don't want to spend quite that much the A70 and A75 are similar but 3.2 megapixels instead of the 4.0 of the A80. The A75 is basically an updated version of the A70 and adds this "print and share" button. The Nikon 4300 is a 4-megapixel model that's a bit cheaper than the A80 and a bit smaller, but it doesn't have all the features and stuff of the Canons.
If you want something that's more like the size of a deck of cards or pack of cigs, there are a few options as well. There's the Minolta Dimage Xt, Canon SD100/SD110 (SD110 is updated with the print-n-share button like the A75), and Pentax Optio S. All are 3.2 megapixels and have limited custom features but do still manage to take a good snapshot and fit in your pocket. The Minolta is the smallest of the three, the Canon is the chunkiest, and the Pentax is in the middle.

i suggest you get a 512MB card or AT LEASTTTTTT 256MB and lower the file sizes. unless you have computer access and can upload them in the middle of your trip, which i doubt.

In that case I'd narrow yer choices down to the A75 or 4300.
The 4300 has higher resolution and probably takes slightly nicer pictures, but its movie mode doesn't have sound.
The A70/A75 has a better movie mode and a few other neat features the 4300 doesn't have, plus it's like 3 ounces lighter if that matters. Of those two ya might as well go with the A75 since it's about the same price, is a bit slimmed down and has that print-n-share dealie.
You'll also want to get a 256 mb memory card which can be had for like 30-40 bucks nowadays after rebates.
