Sadly if we look at all other factors my rap sheet looks hell of a lot better. I have a better overall academic record, have worked as a tutor for the last 3 years (important since most people get hired as TAs), finished my degree in 3.5 years, did a million independent projects, showed successful leadership skills, etc, etc, etc.

Its worse because my friend is shocked that he got admitted and I didn't. His exact quote: "Sean your record is better than mine, why they hell aren't they accepting you." Who knows maybe its because I have insider info that the university is trying not to admit me because I just happened to raise the very bad question: "If students get expelled for cheating and forgery, then why can't faculty members have the same thing done to them." Funny because thats what happened and that faculty member is still there and is running for Chair in our department.

I will take the GRE and if I get above the minimum and I am refused admission then it'll be a nice little curtly worded letter sent to the provost office that will set the ball rolling.

 

Why? Equal opportunity is non existent in this wonderful redneck state. I am scared to drive down to the southern parts because people give very dirty looks to my brother because my sister in law married an asian guy.

 

around here, asian students have the upper hand, because our average gpa is 3.xxx, and the average white student has like a 2.5 or something mediocre like that. so yea, us asians get our ass kissed and white folk get treated as second-tier students:dunno:

Standarized test was created to eliminiate minority, especially those who speak english as a 2nd language. It was made for those fast talking people to score higher. I know a few people at work that can make things sound very good even though they do not have a background in anything solid. They just have the ability to memorize and paraphrase things much better than other people.

The best way to test someone math skill is to have a long test in Calculus 4 (3D Calculus) , Differential Equation, Linear Algebra, Numerical Analysis, and Partial Differential Equation. The answer format must be in a show-all-complete-work and not just guessing C and pray. I also think the ability to show a good knowledge about math should not rest on how fast you can solve a problem but how well you can solve it and be able to explain your work.

By the way, the coordinator is racist.

asianthug_ak47: no race speaks proper english all the time. all you have to do is read it, or speak it, or write it in a business-like fashion when you need to. if you speak like "standardize test eliminate minority" in a job interview, you probably wont be hired. in the real world, you have to put you best effort forward to attract clientele, if your company wants to make money. if you cant do that, you are a worthless employee.

 

Just out of curiosity, did you have to submit a statement of purpose too? That plays a huge role in whether you get accepted or not. Also, admissions is not determined by one person alone, there is a committee that reviews these things. Your friend has some compelling characteristic that made this committee overlook his not so stellar academic record. Maybe some professor shares similar academic interests with your friend and pushed to have him accepted. Also, is your friend's full ride a fellowship, or an RA? If it's an RA, then a individual professor gave him the money, and really it has nothing to do with the admissions committee.
