Default Gun Peeps I got a question

Hey my friend wanted to go shooting about a month ago so I went along and now we are totally addicted....we've gone 3 times in the past 4 weeks. So far I've shot a:
Glock 9mm
S&W 38 special
Ruger 9mm
S&W 45
Beretta 9mm Rifle (I think)
S&W .357

So after shooting all these guns I have realized how little I know about them. So my questions are; what do all the numbers mean and why did the .357 have more kick then the 45 when the 45's bullets were bigger?(at least I think there were).
Also any additional gun knowledge would be appreciated because I'll prolly be in the market for a hand gun and rifle shortly....thanx in advance guys

.45, .357, 9mm, etc... refer to the caliber which is the diameter of the bullet

the .357 has more of a charge to launch the projectile

I'll prolly be buying both a handgun and a rifle in the near future...but like I said I don't know much about them...anyone have any suggestions?
Any other information would be helpful...I want to go for quality not just whatever is cheap and shoots.
