No limits to some people's jackassery
I agree that some people may have thought his abnormal behavior could have escalated so they took a step to have it resolved when it landed.
However, after it was clear that he was being no more than an assh0le; it should have been ended at that, and the guy should be let go.
Just my 0.02.
I don't feel like the Government should step in because someone hurts someone's feelings. If they want to step in because they feel like a situation is perhaps on route to become dangerous (on an airline that'd be bad), then fine, do so. After that cleared up and it is in fact NOT a violent encounter, let the guy go. All he did was point some fingers and call people names.
*shrug*

It's a mistake.
To reply to you're comment more directly though, I don't think they did take any chances with the situation on the flight itself. That's a good thing that they didn't, too.
The Air Marshal kept an eye out and notified the Captain and all that good stuff, just in case it went sour.
Point is, it didn't go sour. He was just an ass and calling people names/pointing at people, after it was determined that the only problem on-board was someone being an ass, he should have been let go.
It's up to a jury to decide what a disturbance is. The air marshall follows his best judgement, and other law enforcement follows that.
Don't mistake flying for a right. Like driving, it is restricted to those who abide by the rules instituted by a regulatory body.
