in fact, I do have a ~8 y/o computer sitting in my closet. How exactly do I go about turning said computer into a router?

8 years might be pushing it for clarkconnect. NetBSD will definately do the job, but it's not anywhere near as user friendly.

What is the old computer? Pentium-class? ISA or PCI?

If your router is a D-link, go to their website and get the latest firmware update for it (make sure your downloading the right one for your router). I had a few problems with my D-link router/WAP a while back and I updated it's firmware and the drivers for my laptops wifi card and I haven't had a problem since. It's free so consider trying that first.
