Sorry but this is bullshit.

People who can afford to pay tuition are getting handouts and my friend who has a 4.0 GPA and got 100% in some subjects gets turned down

how is it bullshit? if you're a student under the age of 24( i think) and live under your parent's roof you're still classified as a dependant and they calculate total household income. she said that the fafsa form didn't have enough digits available to put in her pops' net worth. it's pretty cut and dry. in this case someone who can afford tuition isn't getting a handout.

reading is fundamental

you're wrong. fafsa is geared towards shady families who run cash businesses who cheat their taxes and have a household income below poverty while living the lavish life of a six-digit income earner. all while the children of the legit working middle class get their ass screwed w/o grants or aid.

whatever dude, an average middle class family brings in a combined total of about $70000 a year based on the national average. when budgeted and properly managed, that income should yield a fat savings and a nice retirement plan as well as tuition for for college for children, a mortgage on a nice house, and a comfortable lifestyle.

fafsa is geared toward the lower middle class and below. eligibility for financial aid is calculated based on gross household income and dependents. (fact)

the scenario you speak of is the exception and not the rule since the fafsa application does not have a question that states "Do you participate in tax evasion?" that is another subject entirely and is the exception and not the rule.

That's correct, FAFSA is geared for lower middle class. However, the determination of what class a family is in is income and assets of the year prior to entry into college. People can be clever with their tax returns and, for instance, purchase a new house to live in, classify that as an expense, and since the house you live in is not considered an asset, lower the net income level of the family. It is not illegal, since you did really buy a house and it does count as an expense. There are many games like this that a person with a good accountant can play.

The real people who get screwed on FAFSA are people who are on the border of the lower and upper middle class. Usually a family in this position can't afford to play games to tweak their status, nor can they really afford to pay fully for college. As a result, these families have to take out loans and end up in 6 figure debt 4 years later.

I guess its different here, but usually people pull the kinda shit that sinthetiq and Rich mention and get handouts while people like my buddy whos dad makes 45grand CDN a year while supporting a wife and 3 kids get it in the butt.

Lots. Up to 20,000CDN!

The programs such as the ones my friend applied for cost that much. An MBA or film school can end up costing 100,000 when all is said and done.
