"Better" at what?

I think that the average user would be just as well served by the small, lighter, long-life battery and wireless friendly 600M. There are users who'd have a legitimate need for the full size Pentium 4 in a notebook, but there aren't many people who honestly, really need that.

Centrino unless you are running some serious math computations or doing some pretty serious coding.

Aside from that your not getting any real benefit out of the full Pentium and may as well be runing a Celeron

well we just bought a Dell 8600 with 15.4 WUXGA widescreen, 60gb HD, 1.5 GHZ Mobile M w/ centrino, DVD burner.... and im looking at what dell has right now since we can return it within 30 days...

but people were saying the Pentium M w/ centrino is really good... and that its comparable to a P4 2.4 ghz... but is more efficient etc... better battery life etc..

is this true? it is going to be used for wireless web, word processing, email, etc... not any intense gaming etc...

no gaming then i'd go with a D500 from dell's small business site, bout $900. exactly the same as the 600m/D600 but minus the 3d graphics card.

btw, "Centrino" is a package, Pentium M processor + Intel 802.11b wireless + Intel 855 chipset. the processor alone is a Pentium M, not "Centrino"

It sounds like you picked the right machine.

My field notebook is a full sized 2.4, and the battery usually lasts less than an hour.

What kind of laptop is it? My Dell is a P4 1.8GHz, runs for about 4 hours on batteries if I keep the screen relatively dim. My g/f's IBM, almost identical specs as mine runs...maybe...1 to 1.5 hours on *2* batteries.
