Is it possible that the power is cycling on/off to your speakers? My ancient PowerBook 1400 does that, even when plugged in and it drive me nuts too. Plug in a set of headphones...see if it stops..:dunno:

It's a wild ass guess. h:

Hmm...could be a grounding issue internal to the speakers.. Do those desktop speakers continue to "pop" even when plugged into another source? This is strange...

well if you can actually turn the volume up and down and the clicks get louder or quieter... I'd lean more towards it could be something coming from windows that's causing it. Possibly a bad driver for the sound or something running that's making the sound. Try a diffrent set of speakers/headphones, see if they do the same thing. If they do, then it's most likely coming from the computer, not the speakers. And vice versa.

Do you hear the sound if you have something else making sound, like a song or a video?

do you hear it all the time, or only when windows is loaded? that should determine whether it's hardware or software. see if you can get your hands on an old Win9x bootdisk and boot into DOS; then listen for it.

Are you sitting by a smoke alarm? Many times smoke alarms or other sensors will inject a ticking sound into some electrical components.
