yea they can, without a doubt. after this signing, i think the cubs have the highest payroll for the NL at 93M. i thought they were cheap, but Alou (10M) and Sosa (17M) really eat alot of that up.
now, this is the part where the A-Rod deal starts to mess things up. Kerry Wood, a Texas native, is a free agent next year. Texas unloaded that HUGE contract and now have some money to toss around again. Texas has some great hitters, but their pitching is a complete joke. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Woody heads down south with a big fat contract. (i'm guessing 6yrs/90M)
