DVD X copy works and its really easy to use.

You could dl any number of rip and encode programs out there but this one seems to be the most consistent.

all i want to know is what drive i need. will my DVD-ROM be good enough? or will i need a DVD-RW or the like?

is there a downloadable software in which i will only have to make a couple clicks to transfer the movie from the disc to my computer so i can play it with WMP.

Get DVD decrypter and Auto Gordian knot. All you need is a dvd drive.

As long as you have a DVD player in your comp you can rip directly to your drive.

If you are trying to put it on another disc though you are going to have to compress it to a smaller file format. If its going onto a CDR then use either DIVX or XVID (XVID is better quality than DIVX is btw). If you are going to burn it to DVD you will have to compress it some but not as much as you would with a CDR so the quality will be better overall.

i use dvd decrypter to move the entire dvd to the hdd
i use dvd2one if i want to copy a dvd quickly
i use dvd decrypter and clonedvd (elby) if i want to copy a dvd with "better" quality
i use burnatonce to burn the dvds because it takes up little ram
i also have dvd 43 to use with dvd2one

confused yet?

i also have TMPGEnc but i dont know how to use it yet

I use dvd decrypter to move it over to my harddrive, then I use gordian knot to encode it to an .avi file.
