Get an acoustic and learn the chords and scales. Don't become someone's slave and start playing cover songs. Learn the structure of music and create your own. Go to www.music123.com or www.musiciansfriend.com and do a search for acoustics. You can get a very good one for under $100, heck my 12 string only cost me $235.

:werd: Just get a cheap yamaha 100 buck guitar and replace the strings because they suck. But dont buy a really nice guitar at first. Get a cheap one to learn on.

definately start on acoustic and do as axemansean said, it will help you so much later on, and switching from acoustic to electric later down the road is easier than going from electric to acoustic in my opinion. or be like me and like the acoustic better good luck to you

get something used....you can pick up an old guitar at a garage sale for like 10 bucks. My first guitar cost $5....it was a piece of crap, but it worked, and I learned on it, so I had no complaints. Once you get a little better, then you can invest in something half way decent.

yea, like everyone is saying. acoustic is probably a better way to learn. learn classical guitar - if you're pretty good at that, you can pick up most anything else. learn where the notes are, the chords, scales, arpeggios, etc. they all come into play later, and in all forms of guitar playing.

get a used acoustic that sound really nice. buying a new crappy sounding one isnt worth it. later u'll be learning to play barre chords and its hard on cheap guitars. when i started i bought i new $150 guitar, and it souded ok, considering it was the first time i played. but later on, it learned it sounded like crap. so i bought a used one, and im happier than ever. used acoustics like takamine or taylors are nice.
