An evening VW style
The engine i think you're referring to, when you say "beat the supra" is simply a turbo VR6. Here's an example of what one sounds like, granted, its got a test-pipe and exhaust, but you get the idea.

Several people have recorded 9-second runs by boosting and building up this engine. I also plan on boosting mine, but my goal isn't as lofty. A daily-driven 12 second Jetta is fine by me.

serious, any daily 12sec car is good, but i like the rabbit becuz it looks so beat up and crap, ultimate sleeper. But turbo vr6 is a bit out of my price range, darn. i never thought jettas could be that fast becuz thr kinda heavy...
They're porky, but not THAT heavy... 3000 lbs or so. It's obviously designed as a "comfortable" car. I wouldn't go quoting the magazines though, VW under-rates their engine outputs.
VW engines have great torque and a very flat powerband. It translates into fairly quick and fun-to-drive cars, even in stock form. Most stock jetta VR6/1.8T's can consistently tick off mid 15's or so, depending on the setup. Granted, it'll get smoked by a bunch of stock cars, but this is fine enough for me.
I also like the old GTI/rabbits... those things were awesome.

HOWEVER
It is moving on, more and more people on vwvortex are moving past the entire "Euro Stretch" fetish that they had, and it is showing in the vehicles that are being put out nowadays.
Soon, that stretching will be a thing of the past. Now, if only those damn Brock wheels would become a think of the past too.

My dream is a 56 split with 1921 cc engine, Mag 44 heads, dual del carbs, two tone paint, factory roof rack and the euro semaphores.

i remember the rabbit has such a small turn radius that in a residential area, it can make a u-turn w/o having to go reverse/foward, also has no power steering. my friend also had a 16v scirocco, didnt know what they did with that, they also had a BMW M1 (but crashed it into a tree).
