I stand corrected on the Miramax comment.

I never compared my Region 3 of Spirited Away against the Disney release of Spirited away, to see how similar the sub titles were or weren't.

 

Disney just needs to wake up and catch up to reality. The problem is, they don't know what kids want today or are unwilling to make the changes. Unfortuantely, kids today aren't entertained like we were. I loved disney's old movies...Lion King, Little Mermaid, Fantasia, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin...I would show these movies to my kids ANYDAY over some of the garbage out there.
I believe Disney is taking the right step into a world that they hadn't ventured into (live action movies). However, i think they are fighting a demon they created...the name "Disney" is associated with family values, particularly American family values. I believe in order for Disney to survive in this world, they need to start making a change..doesn't mean they should stop promoting the Mouse, I LOVE THE MOUSE...i'm just saying, it's time to look in other directions to survive. Like all good investments, I would tell Disney: "Don't put all your eggs into one basket (animation/family values)....spread them out so you aren't so dependent on one."

Nice sentiment but what you fail to see is that Disney produces and releases thousands of live action films a year under any number of the labels they own. I don't have the list in front of me but they own like 10 or so of the most major releasing companies but try not to directly associate or make it common knowledge of their ownership.

A Disney company released Rob Zombies House of 1000 Corpses...just to give you an idea of what they do release....Disney subsidiary also released Blair Witch, Hellraiser series, and most if not all of Stephen Kings movies.

Disney is far from losing money but they are quickly losing a very lucrative market by ignoring the changes in family construction and what is deemed entertainment by children anymore. Parents also like to watch these kids movies as much as the children do (trust me I watch them all the time with my kids) and the parents need to get some entertainment value out of it as well but lately Disney has forgotten about entertaining the family and has gone straight to the children with a low level of thought put into it and even kids are calling them duds.

Last movie they released that was impressive was actually Brother Bear.....but it had been years since anything good passed through their doors before that.

Disney's problem is they made some freaking classic animated movies based on things like fairytales and old-school children's books. Once they got to like the 70s they started doing more original concepts like The Aristocats and The Rescuers. By the 80s they kind of got away from the classic formula and tried to be "hip" with things like Oliver & Company. They had a mini-Renaissance with The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King but by then the new sort of epic Disney movie formula had kind of worn thin. Pocahontas, Mulan, Tarzan, etc are all kind of flat. Now they're just milking the shit out of every established franchise they already have with crappy direct-to-video releases of sequels. They started doing this in the mid-90s with a horrible Aladdin sequel that was actually a rally long episode of the tv series and have since put a little more effort into the releases but it's still a crappy direct-to-video sequel of a classic movie. Hell they already have sequels to Tarzan and Lilo & Stitch.

 

I am not sure who all the owners are but I do know that Disney has no direct stake in their company except as a former releasing agent.

That was a solid movie, but I would hardly call it impressive.

 

The Lion King was good, but I still prefer the Japanese version that came out circa 1950's.
