I believe they're called an umlaut. Or maybe that's just what a u with two dots over it is called.

As I recall from German, the two dots are called an umlaut over any of the letters...

In German only the a, o, u have dots over them, and the dots are called umlauts. The umlaut a sounds like "ay", the umlaut o sounds like "er" and the umlaut u sounds like "ur"

Yeah, I meant to be more specific, "any of the letters" = any of the vowels that have them in the German alphabet...not like "Q umlaut" or something.
