Default quick computer question (mobo, processor)

I'm guessing that all I need for my computer right now is a new case (easy), motherboard and processor. If I get those items and just swap over the 2 hard disks (with everything else still on them), RAM, video card, sound card, floppy drive, cd drive, and other misc. items, will it work upon startup or do I have to start from scratch and re-install everything?

Everything should go pretty smooth, you'll have to make sure you uninstall the drivers for your current motherboard and stuff. What Operating System are you running?? Also if you are getting a rather high-powered processor(Anything over 2Ghz.) and you are going from something somewhat older, considering buying a new Power Supply(about $75 for a 400w Antec).

If you don't have a pre-built computer right now, your current case should be fine as long as it is of ATX form and has a PSU of 300W (minimum) or greater...

However, if you're looking for a new case, Chieftec makes some decent cases at an affordable price, and Thermaltake makes a couple nifty ones as well, so long as you don't mind loud lables on your case.

Actually there are 2 reasons why I'm doing this.

1) Dell proprietary hardware = kaka. I can't run a decent power supply unless I buy one from Dell, which will cost me $ 91287391883772.88.

2) All I really need is a new processor and a new power supply, but that can't be changed unless I get a new motherboard. That way, I'll have a decent computer not only for games, but with all the 3D graphics work that I do. I need to cut down on rendering time!

The fastest Athlon XP (Barton) should do well... a 2800+ should be more than sufficient, and is $200 less than the 3200+... also, when shopping for computer parts, try www.newegg.com and www.pricewatch.com

What he said ....Buy yourself a cheap case, nice powersupply, and the motherboard and processor and you'll be set.
Oh one more thing, Make sure your memory is compatible, check to make sure it is DDR

How do I know which motherboard works with what case? Are they all pretty much the same? Help would be appreciated.

Yes as long as its atleast a mid-tower(normal sized pc) any ATX motherboard will work. So when looking, look for one called a mid-tower.
