Potential in Automatic WRX?
Does the 4-speed automatic WRX have more potential than the 5-speed manual WRX? I was reading an old issue of SCC (I think) and some guy chose to modify a 4-speed because the tranny was tougher? Is this true?
The automatic causes less driveline shock to the transmission on launch and drastically reduces broken gears. I've seen several people with 5 speeds blow up 1st gear, and some of them were bone stock. Easy Street Motorsports has the fastest WRX in the US and they switched to an auto to get into the 9's without breaking parts every run. While it isn't as fun with and auto, it's fun more often since you're not in the shop with broken gears.
People always talk about blowing up WRX trannies and say that they're weak. The thing is, if you consistantly drop the clutch at 6000 rpms, you can kill any tranny. WRX trannies blow because they are beat on, not because they are inherrantly weak.
