WRX trannies are inherently weak, but you are right in that most of them die because of high rpm clutch drops. I've got 125+ runs on mine and have replaced the clutch, but at least my gears are still intact. Clutch installed = $900, New gearset = $4K+install.

I've done multiple 1.90 60' times on the same tires I drive on everyday. The guys that break trannies are running 1.7-1.8's on street tires.

Shifting would be pretty precise and driver error (in shifting) won't be really an issue in auto trannies... but like it's been said... would you really drive an auto and have fun? For crusing and pimping- auto.... for everything else...

I know that, at least in Australia, where belive it or not, there are some fast ass cars, most of the hardcore drag racers use either Sequential transmissions(30grand), or automatics.

AFAIK, the fastest RWD Skyline, fastest Supra, fastest 2.0L WRX etc. are all Automatic

Most of the high powered Supras, some even with 1000hp are running the automatics because theyre better built, and the shift patterns are quicker.

Autos are also easier to launch, because you can "spool" the torque covnertor up by revving it up with your foot on the brake, and youll get a clean launch.

Also, if you live in the city, auto will also be easier to drive

Not fastest, quickest.

These are all drag cars, and yes, in drag cars mechanized shifting is usually quicker and more reliable than human shifting.

Most of us here in the real world though, are not building professional or highly competitive amateur drag cars and instead want to drive our cars to work/school/shopping, take some occassional twisties, and maybe hit up an autocross or (heaven forbid) a drag strip. And for those things, most people enjoy shifting for themselves.
