Gun owners!
So, after a few theft attempts on one car, and only having my hatch a few months, and having an attempt on that (at my house), just for the sake of protection, and protecting my property, I have thought about getting a gun. Yes, completely legal. Any anti-gun enthusiasts, please keep your mouth shut. I've been where you are. I agree with you. But my mind is made up that when I have the money, and time to get everything legally, I will have one.
Now onto the point. I've been looking at a 9mm Beretta. Friends are saying to go with a Glock. What do you guys have? What do you like or dislike about them? Why do you recommend what you do? Detail is awesome for a guy that has shot guns in the past, but has never really taken the time to be a marksman, nor a gun junky.

Listen to your friends. Go with the Glock... I tried a few different guns out (USP compact, ppk, etc.) and found I liked the Glock the best. I went with the 9mm sub compact because I am not a large guy so anything bigger than that just gets in the way. Doesn't matter what you have, .45, .40, 9mm.... if you have hollow points in there you can stop anyone. The glock only has one external safety which is on the trigger and the rest are internal. I wanted the USP compact originally because it had an external safety that you had to hit before you can fire the gun. Thats the last thing you want to do when you have to pull out your gun to use it.
I'd stray away from a Beretta 92FS, just because they can sometimes be rather finnicky(sp?) when cleaning and consequently, when firing.
I, personally, am not a fan of Glocks in the least. But I cannot dispute their quality. A Glock is an excellent gun, pretty dang accurate even at a range of ~40 yards or so, if you've practiced, pretty darn reliable too. The downside is that it's ugly and it's expensive. A lot of Glocks also have issues feeding JHP (Jacketed Hollow Point), but you can fire EFMJ if you have feed issues (Expanding Full Metal Jacket)
For a brute force reliable gun, I fire a Ruger P944DC (DeCocker) .40CAL. The gun isn't as refined as a Glock, is a little heavier (absorbs more recoil though), isn't quite as accurate, but is as reliable as a stone axe. I've got over 1000 rounds in it recently with no jams of any kind. It's also a "cheap" gun (you can find them for ~$350-$450) and like I said, solid.
Personally, my favorite is an H&K USP 9 - Not compact. I was extremely accurate with it, at 40 and 50 yards respectivly, the recoil was very managable and I was able to do bursts of shot and keep it within a small group. Downside to the H&K? Not quite as reliable as say, the Ruger (on par with the Glock), but it's ugly and expensive too.
Now, if you're wanting something for home defense, really man. Don't go with a handgun. In all honesty, a shotgun is by far a better protection weapon. Not only is it more accurate, it has more knockdown power and usually doesn't require you to even fire it to get your message across. I'd suggest the Winchester 1300 Defender w/ optional pistol grip (still has stock behind it). Holds 8 rounds (2 3/4" shells) or 7 3" shells, pump action, as small as you can legally have one and it's sexy.

Not to mention you don't need a permit for that:thumbup:

You just make sure you're 21, pass a simple test that shows you know how a gun works (very simple, like; what to NOT shoot at and stuff) and then go buy your gun. Wait 10 days and pick it up.
You have to wait 10 days to pickup the shotgun too, in California. Any gun, 10 days.

You don't need a permit for a hand gun either (in California). I mean, unless you're talking about carrying.

I believe you need a permit to even purchase a handgun in CT. I don't really know tho... but you can walk into a gun store with your permit and walk out with a shiny new gun. No waiting period:thumbup: And if you don't pass the test you have issues....
I had the Glock 9, S&W 9, SKS, AK47, Mossberg 12 and a Mossberg 10, Uzi compact 9, Mac10, H&K 308 and a few others.....so in setting that straight let me say a few things before I go any further.
You are buying a gun thinking its gonna stop people frm breaking into or stealing your car huh? Well heres some news for you.....they don't care because you never heard them in the first place so you have to catch them in the act before you can do anything about it. If you shoot them while they are breaking into your car then you are screwed legally because you are shooting a person in a non threatening situation. On top of all that have you ever pointed a gun at a person with the intent of using it?
I doubt you have and I seriously doubt if the situation came up that 9 out of 10 people could actually pull the trigger, not to mention live with the consequences of such an act.
I am not anti gun but when I see posts from virtual tough guys like this it it just makes me laugh at the ignorance of what they think is going to happen and the reality.
Ok with that rant out of the way...the Glock 9 is a very nice gun and very reliable...get a lot of time on the range or you will be wasting ammo if the time ever comes to have to hit something (not as easy as it would seem), shotguns are inexpensive and very effective...pretty much point and shoot and its tough to miss your target in almost any situation.
