We didn't have any trouble with Target in regards to returning things. We got a duplicate gift (more on that in a minute) but didn't have a gift reciept, so they let us exchange it for something else in the same department at the same price. Quick and painless.
My gripe with Target registry is that they often didn't remove items from the list after they'd been purchased, resulting in duplicates. It was so irritating having to exchange a bunch of stuff after taking the time to make a registry in the first place!
