Not all cards can do what all other cards can. An nVidia card has other features, that older voodoo card might not be able to do.

And that guy telling you it should work if it's got xxMB of ram is BS. That's like saying "well it's got 4 tires, it should be able to do a quarter mile in 12 seconds". It's his fault for being an idiot, not yours.

If it says on the box that it REQUIRES an Nvidia or ATI card... and you don't have one, it's your own fault. However... if it doesn't say that, then and only then do you have a case. Other than that, it would still be your fault.

Well if that's really all it says, then it IS their mistake. I have a 32mb Matrox video card that probably couldn't play it. They say 3d, but any card can DO 3d. They need to be specific.
