337 edition was made available to the US because Europe got the 25th AE edition. since the gti was introduced in the US 6 years later than in europe the 25th AE was never going to come to the US.
well so everyone in the US bitched and wrote letters (including myself) and so they decided to bring the 25th AE to the US but call it 337 Edition which is the original chassis code for the 1983 GTI in the US.
it had the 180hp 1.8T engine and 6-speed. I was #1 on the wait list but passed due to the dealer trying to rape me out of another 2400bucks.

it's well worth the couple hundred dollars different. Better seats, better suspension, better transmission, better kit, etc...

20AE added a lot of the small things that they left out in the 337.
mostly cosmetic stuff like blacked out headlight housing and black headliner and of course Navi.
it was deemed necessary to be able to bring the car over to the US.
