Okay so to me, the critical elements of this longitude project thing are:

- Society at the time knew it needed the invention to advance
- Government tried to encourage invention thru reward
- Society then did advance after the invention came about and was implemented

So...........

I would try to figure out something that has similarities with these aspects and try to draw a parallel as to why it does each of these things.

Maybe if I had a few less beers in me I'd be able to come up with something specific (not like I should though).

I'd go for something that enhanced the area of exploration and/or transportation that came about due to a particular need of a government, state, culture or society. You could also go the route of weapons since in the 17th century naval warfare was the only game in town besides running at each other on a battlefield with muskets and stuff.

Air travel, submarines, space travel, nuclear weapons...

i was going to mention our space program...since it is funded by our govt.....i think. but i dunno about how it has "enhanced" our society...
