Default HELP, used bumper paint removal

I bought a used rear lip from someone for $40, what the best way of removing the paint from the lip so i sand it down and primer if before re-painting? Can you sand blast polyurathane to get paint off?

No you cannot sand blast it. You can have it blasted with a plastic media blaster. It shoots plastic instead of sand and is good for removing paint from plastic. Or you can purchase a DA sander and sand it off yourself. Its not necessary to remove the paint unless its chipping, cracking, etc. If the paint looks ok you just need to wet sand it with 600 grit paper.

Well in that case you could do it by hand which would take forever or by a electric or DA sander. Plastic media blasters are rare and you probably won't be able to find a shop with one. My suggestion is, if you have an air compressor, buy a DA (dual action) sander.

If your using a DA to remove the paint, I'd use between 180 and 320. 180 will remove it quicker but you have to be carefull. To be on the safe side, use 320. The DA sanders have two sanding methods which is why its called dual action. One setting is where the DA just spins in a circle which is good for grinding. The other setting it vibrates and spins which is good for preping. Make sure you have it set on the vibration to prevent damaging your plastic lip. You CAN use the DA sander to prep, but if you're not careful you could damage it and then you'll see waves after its painted. If you want to save some time and spend some money I'd get the 3M hookit pad. Its a sponge like pad that attaches to the DA, but then you have to buy the hookit sandpaper because it velcros to the pad. This will prevent waves in the paint from preping with a DA. Go to a paint supply store that carries 3M products, they'll know what I'm talking about.

if you don't mind spending a little extra money heres my suggestion. Buy the 3M hookit backing pad, sponge pad (don't know the technical term), and some 320 hookit sandpaper. Sand off your paint with 180 being very careful to keep the DA level with the surface. Don't sand at an angle. Then finish it off with the 320 hookit. This is the method I used to prep my lip. The rock chips were so bad I sanded it down the plastic with 180. You might want to practice using DA first b/c its not hard to round off a sharp edge, then you're screwed. Or put the DA on a real slow setting till you get used to it.
