Shifter Grinding?
Hey, new to the forum.
I've been researching the RSX-S heavily, and just got in one yesterday for the first time. I'm essentially in love, though keeping an open mind for any similar packages - Golf, Mazda3, Civic Si. Also looking at some heavier competition like the WRX, RX-8, and 350Z (tho that one's a bit pricey).
Anyway, on my drive the shifter felt fantastic (big upgrade from my Focus ZX3 - clunkbox), however the consumer reviews on Edmunds mentioned quite a few times that there are problems with grinding in the shifter (1st->2nd, 2nd->3rd).

Since Edmunds is not exactly known for high-quality discussions, I was wondering what the true fans think, and if it is a legit problem I should worry 'bout when/if I pick up my very own. Or, is it just a buncha idiots on Edmunds who don't know how to drive a stick?

Send them an e-mail asking if they pushed in the clutch :chuckles:
But seriously they may have got a heavily abused car, I don't think a brand new Honda would have transmission problems, they are supposed to be some of the best.

The grinding was a problem in the first 02-03 models of the RSX, it was a 1st to 2nd gear grind...supposedly they fixed it after that, but that's just what I heard :dunno:.

BUT, the 02-03 RSX-S DOES have a notorious 1->2 grind. Especially when its cold, and not at all revolutions. But yes its a documented problem.
If you want to read all about the RSX transmission grinds I'd recommend the forums over at ClubRSX.com -- there are never-ending discussions about this over there...
Briefly -- some people with '04 RSX's are still reporting problems.
Personally, my '03 RSX (bought in Feb '03) started grinding going into 2nd after cold starts when the outside temperatures were cold -- it would go away once the car warmed up. It went away completely once the outside temperatures pushed higher and never came back even once over this past winter, thankfully.

The link is for a petition for fixing the shifter grind. Problem is, the thread focuses on '03s. But even so, I'm not gonna focus on this as such a major problem. That stick felt so snick-snick to me, and I'm hopeful that the problem [at least] isn't as widespread as some RSX (non-)fans are making it out to be.
Thanks to all who responded. I may look forward to joining the "owner's club" soon enough..

i have an 04 type S and i have the "grind" - i hesitate to call it a grind, its just that the shift is a little rough going into gear... mine is usually from 1-2 but on occasion 2-3. i checked the manual and if you use their suggested shift points, it is smooth, but if you are just a little bit off the suggested shift point, it is rough. so, it doesn't happen all the time, at least not to me. and yes, clubRSX beats this topic to DEATH. they have a petition and everything. its not really that bad, i wouldn't worry about it.
