one more thing...? On Edmunds, they say that all Preludes, 97+ have 195hp (besides when they go to 200hp), is this true? and if it is, what is the difference b/t a Type SH and a regular?

The HP figures are for automatic and manual, repsectivly. A Type SH uses what is called, "ATTS" or Active Tourqe Transfer System.

Well, for starters, nine grand is not enough for any Type SH in any worthy condition. You may find a 1997 or 1998 base for under 10 grand, but with higher mileage of course. 1997-2001 is the fifth (and final) geration. For 1997-1998, the car had 195 hp, and then from 1999-2001 all models have 200. ATTS uses a hydraulic system to transfer torque from the wheel with the least resistance to the wheel with the most. A hydraulic version of posi-trac for front wheel drive. When I bought mine, I tested both the Type SH and the base, and didn't feel the SH was worth an extra 3 grand. They did come standard with a decklid spoiler, straight (instead of curved) spoke rims, and a leather wrapped shift knob (instead of rubber). The Type SH has a different front suspension geometry to open room for the ATTS and for handling, but as I said, there is no major difference untill you really push the car to its limits. If you get a Type SH, don't plan on making front suspension mods. The ATTS equipment will get in the way of the shocks and springs, and you will just have a mess trying to get everything appart (there are also vaccum lines that run around the transmission, which complicates changing the clutch..... in other words, the base is much easier to work on). It's a great car, fun to drive, and smooth and silky to shift. You can get what you want, but to save headaches and money, I suggest getting a base.

The 5th gens are nice, but with the amount of money you're working with you could get a hella nicer 4th gen(92-96). Now these have 5 HP less(190HP), but STOCK, they're faster, 0-60 and 1/4 mile. I know guys with stock 4th gens running 14.8-14.9 at the track. Ultimately the choice is up to you, but with the money you have to work with you could either get a pretty ****ty 5th gen or a really nice 4th gen. Good luck either way!!

Sonik does have a point. For that money, you'd have a really nice 4th gen.

OK first off although my SH has been ok, do yourself a favor and get a base model. If you were looking new I'd say go with the SH if you liked but used you don't want to run itno problems with the ATTS.

Second the 97-98 auto 5th Gens had 190 hp, while the base and SH had 195. All numbers were magically upped 5hp for '99 up with no real change in parts.

Last the 4th Gen argument is a good one but I couldnt find a nice 4th gen VTEC 4 years ago, it must be harder now. I suppose finding a nice Si and doing a H22 swap would be easier but it's work.
