Default spring cleaning...

ok so its that time of the year where i overhaul my car and fix verything i broke over the winter

i have 2 main questions

how hard is it to replace valve stem seals? will this require pulling the motor out? im used to v8's and doing anything on them in the car is a no no...
ive been eating/burning oil for a while now and i need to fix it..everyone says its normal but its reallty pretty bad..like atleast 2-3 quarts between changes,...sometimes my oil light comes on 1500 miles after change and its almost empty....its not leaking i leave it parked and its always dry under it hours later... its def either leaking down through the cyl or out through the valve seals.

secondly and not as important... i need the exhaust bolts that go directly into what i believe to be the tranny or oil pan..its obviously been a while since i been down there.....its on the back side of the cat... i dont know the thread of these bolts and apparently neither did whoever owned this car before me cause they arent there. performance wise it doesnt matter at all BUT I HATE THE RATTLING OF METAL ON METAL

thanks

you dont have to pull the head to change valve stem seals.. you need an air compressor and a compression test kit. what you do is thread in the compression tester hose (into spark plug hole) and you introduce air into the cylinder. be aware that it will turn the engine a few degrees. the air will keap the valve closed (seated in the valve seat) while you remove the spring and replace the seals. it sounds like maybe your rings are screwed.. that is alot of oil to be losing. you are sure there are no leaks??? the block and head are dry?? you might as well do a compression test on all four just be sure that its worth the effort to replace just the valve stem seals
on the exhaust, i know those bolts are bastard to start because there is tension on the exhaust..so whever did the oil pan last or exhaust work probably said fuck it, because usually they cross thread in.
