Default How to tell a good motor

Im going to check out a 97-00 h22 motor at some shop. They say its jdm, under 40k, and it has a silver head. I just want to know if it is a good motor or not.

stick you finger in the oil filler and taste the oil. If it tastes really bad, the engine is no good. JK. get the engine code, it is stamped on the block near the transmission. also have the engine leak-down and compression tested.

I think you can do a compression test by cranking to motor manually.

It must be good, it is JDM. :chuckles:

Unless you take the engine apart, you have to swap it in and do a compression and leak down.

Have you ever tried manually cranking the engine with the spark plugs still in it? It is harder than shit. Even that won't even create enough pressure to register on a compression test.

It is a good idea in theory, though. h:

if the tranny and starter is bolted up still just hookup the starter to do the compression test if not then do a leak down . otherwise you never know the condition of the motor! also double check the motor if H22A it's JDM if H22A4 it's USDM and thats very imporant if your in a state like california where JDM motor are not allowed except if direct replacement.

you can do a leakdown test with the motor out of the car.
