Default exhaust questions

ok...what difference in hp is there between me buying headers and a cat back set up($600), or just taking my cat hollowing it out, getting a different muffler, and headers ($300) ???i dont really see what the real difference can be..if the aftermarket pipe is 2.5" and the stock pipes are 2.5" why pay so much for stuff that wont make a change?? who cares if the exhaust under my car isnt shiny new...itll get the job done right?

stock piping is 1.8 or 2.0 (don't remember), evo is 2.36' and most aftermarket catbacks will be 2.3 or 2.25. The only 2.5 i know of is hytech and jdm. Same as the header, 2.25 collector unless you get a jdm header or custom kettler expensive header.

hollowing your cat out (test pipe)? Well it's illeagle, pollutes our air and you will be driving with a constant cel. So if your car really isn't running right, you won't know because now your cel is always on.

Stock Integra 218.3 cfm

Catco (metal core) 2.25" 223.8 cfm
Catco (metal core) 2.5" 271.9 cfm

Random Tech 2.25" 297.1 cfm

Catco (std. core) 2.25" 338.2 cfm
Catco (std. core) 2.5" 388.0 cfm

Car Sound 2.25" 342.7 cfm

Test Pipe 2.25" 407.1 cfm

cfm = flow capacity in cubic feet per minute

Just get a highflow cat.

I have a few exhaust questions of my own. First of all how difficult is it to change out an exhaust by yourself? Is there welding involved or is it basically clamps maybe a little grinder cutting?

Roughly, how much should it cost to get a factory/standard exhaust replaced on a 92 Acura Integra? Excluding a muffler which I don't need.

I'm being charged $470 total for new exhuast, excluding muffler/tailpipe, and excluding a new catylitic converter. I have a feeling I'm being ripped off.

Wow thas alot...I would say get an aftermarket bolt on and DIY. I ran my exhaust on my old 96 Civic Ex and It took about 1.5 hrs. The problem is ground clearance. Get some high ramps and a Chilton's for torque specs and hanging locations and all that jazz. May be costly if you dont already have tools and ramps but at least you can say "It's done right".

The reason I say to try it yourself is because I had a muffler shop run some Flowmasters on my Chevelle and 2 months later I was welding the welds back together. The dude working on my car was not very experienced but at the time I didnt have the tools or access to a welder. Also it was Friday and I needed it done then for the weekend.

I forked over the $470 for the exhaust work. It didn't feel good but my car is running quieter than ever, which I like. But I am looking into getting a welder. I have lots of tools but no ramps and no welder. Its difficult lying on your back and welding on exhaust parts anyways. I don't have much experience welding although I've watched people do it, damaging my eyes at the same time.

What I should have done is taken it to a momz/popz mechanic custom exhaust garage and paid half the price.
