Default remedy/solution/fix for burning oil?

Is there anything you can do to your engine to stop it from burning oil badly?

I have a 1992 honda prelude and it burns oil like crazy. Can I do anything about that, or am i screwed?

i know that prelude engines have a tendency to do that, but is there any remedy, that is cost effective and worth doing or is it better just to keep pouring oil in there. I'd just rather it not burn any oil. Would an engine flush help?

first locate the oil leak second you could try using some oil stabilizers suck as lucas also try using thicker oil.
once you find the leak or leaks then we can give you more on how to fix that if possible

its burning oil if you have blue exhaust. and if thats the case it can be a few number of things. your valve seals could be going bad and need replaced, which wouldnt cost a whole lot to fix. or it can be your oil rings around your pistons in which case can be very expensive to fix. basically you would need to boar out your cylinder walls and get new rings.

It's not leaking the oil, it's burning it.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to bore the cylinders when replacing the oil rings.

Juanchy01, how much oil does it go through between oil changes?

You don't need to bore it at all.

You will HAVE to hone the cylinder walls for the rings to seat properly. Honing and boring are two completely different things.

My bet is on the piston rings. I had the same problem and I suspected valve seals, but those will only burn oil under vaccuum like downshifting or idling and I was obviously burning oil under boost.

I highly recommend against using a thicker oil or Lucas product to bandaid the situation. Your motor is unhealthy, so you need to fix the problem, not cover it up.

So to answer the initial question, no, there isn't a cost effective method to cure this because it is a very labor intensive job to fix it. I suggest that you pick up a Helms manual and a set of tools and get cracking because that is the only cheap way to do it. My piston ring job only cost me the price of a new headgasket, head bolts, and rings ($250 total) and 10 hours of hard labor.

it goes through all of the oil between oil changes. last oil change i took it in and it barely had any oil left in it. im surprised the oil light didn't come on. needless to say, i check the oil almost everyday now.

by the way Däs Schmoo, where could i get a helms manual, i would definitely rather do it myself, i don't have any experience with car mechanics, but i am interested to learn and would put the time in.
