Default Question on Honda Dealership advice

I just got off the phone with the dealership I go to with any major work that I typically get done and asked them what it would cost to have my timing belt and water pump done (since they seem to go around the same time and are basically the same labor) and they quoted me $675. For some reason that seemed a little lower than I expected. Is that right? The reason that I question this is because I opened the question with "I would like to know how much it costs to replace a timing belt on a 2001 Honda Prelude" --Then the service person asked me if it was a 4 or 6 Cylinder. They only based the price from that. I then asked when they recommended changing the belt, which was followed up with the question "What year was your car again?" I said 2001. Then they told me not until 105,000 miles Uhmm, first I've heard all kinds of numbers on this, and I know the subject has been beat to death, but I'd like someone, maybe who works at a dealer? tell me a solid recommended number. I'm just over 80,000 miles, and am thinking of possibly getting another car (I've had this car for 4 years now, time for a change ) Most of my miles are highway miles (70+ miles round trip per day for work) Also, the reason I ask the price, is that I've also read on here where the 5th Gens are more expensive due to more labor intensive work?

What year car do you own? I'm also sure that you didn't get honda parts, nor did you get it done at the stealership.

The interval is 105k. Labor is 2.8 hours w/water pump.

I just had my timing belt changed on my 99 Prelude and I paid about $550 at my local Honda dealership. I believe that Honda doesn't "recommend" a timing belt change until you go over 100,000 miles, so at 80,000 I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you're planning on selling the car soon. I had about 90,000 miles on my car and decided to get it done because I do plan on keeping the car for a couple more years.

Thanks for the feedback, that means I'll probably keep it around another year before I sell.

Well I work for John Eagle Honda in Houston Tx, and for a 01 prelude to get a timing belt and water pump change its 572.00 with a parts and tax and walkout.
Anywhere and everywhere you go in Houston Tx we are the cheapest dealership around to service.

Service for the 105,000 comes out to be 296.00 everything. Oil, trans, tire rotation and spark plugs.

If you have any problems let me know.. Andy

i work for acura as a tech and they recommend timing belt and water pump at 60k-105k / 5 years regardless of mileage..

you can look at your timing belt and if you see little cracks then its time, they dont need to be big cracks either. your timing belt is one of the most important things on your car. if it snaps your engine is gonna have some serious damage.

that price sounds about right. water pump, timing belt and drive belt replacement will run ..:
integra- 505-605
cl- 629-674
tl/ vigor- 630-649
legend- 599-729
rl- 779
mdx- 779 these are 'special' prices

regular prices are
integra- 805-893
cl- 918-962
tl/vigor- 918-937
legend- 887-1017
rl- 1067
mdx- 1067

hope this helped you out

Thanks for all the replies. I'll take a look at mine and see what it looks like. Too bad I'm not anywhere near TX , but I'm about 5 minutes from MD, if I could get a 'special price' on a prelude belt
