Default Are H22's weak???

My friend just bought a 97Lude with 54,000 miles. Well we went to the track a week later and on his 3rd run he hit the rev limiter in 3rd gear and it bent all 8 exhaust valves. I hit my rev limiter constantly and my car is fine, it also has 93,000 miles. Are the H's that weak or is this a freak thing.

i hit mine before and my H22a4 fine. I dont make habit out of it and no one really should in my opinion. I only know of a few cases where this happened and mostly from mis-shifts so my guess is its a freak thing.

that has GOT to be a freak thing... the new trend seems to be h22 swaps in every car under the damn sun... if you put an h22a5 in a civic hatch.. it'll run in the high 13s stock....

and i'm pretty sure the fastest front wheel drive car (stephan papadakis) is running an h22 for his 7 second car...

you can't expect every engine of the same series to be able to run the same way... honda doesn't make everything perfect.. that just sounds like one of those freak things..

Did he miss shift? I can't see bending valves just hitting the rev limiter unless he hit the wrong gear. Does he have cam gears or something that moved his rev limit past facory?

Ouch! I've learned a long time ago, no matter how well your engine is built, redline exists for a reason, therefore, you should not hit it. Think about this...... Porsche's factory warranty on 911 Turbos states that if you ever go past redline and then take the car in for a problem the warranty is void. And they can check it by simply connecting the OBD computer. Some dealers may check if you've ever hit redline every time you come in for an oil change. My step-brother owned a 1999 for 2 years, and he said that the dealer was adamant about that. I just prefer never to hit it myself. The Prelude is fast enough between 4500 and 7000.

I highly doubt the problem is on Honda's end.

I think he just ran 3rd till the end and hit the rev limiter as he was going over the line. He put the car in nuetral and when the revs went down it just sputtered a little and shut off. I dont know my first run I hit mine about 10 times from spinning in first, I just thought bending valves was a little extreme.

I figured it was just a freak thing, his beater car is a 92 Si with 203,000miles and it comes up wrong on Carfax so who knows for sure. He also had a 98 before this and he beat that constantly and it never had a problem for the 12,000 miles he owned. Just wondering if this happened to anyone else.

H22s have the largest and heaviest valvetrain of the honda motors. upgrade those springs and retainers if u race.
