Default 92 Prelude Air Con problem?

New to this forum so grateful for any help, suggestions or advice anyone can give me.
I've got a 92 Prelude 2.2 Vtec (japanese import) which has started making a really unpleasant low screeching noise when idling or at low revs. Only just had the car MOT'd this week so went back to see if the mechanic could help. The guy reckons it's a problem with the air con pump and/or the bearings in it. He seems fairly sure but advised me to take it to an air con specialist.
Anyone aware of or had similar problems? If it is the air con unit what sort of prices are we talking for new/reconditioned units? I don't really want to take it to Honda unless I have to so any suggestions, help, advice would be much appreciated.
Btw, much as I love my car I know nothing about it so layman language is necessary! Thanks.

If it's the compressor, your talking big bucks to have it fixed if you pay somebody. I read and learned about auto a/c's at this site so i could fix mine myself. www.aircondition.com I absolutely can't go without an a/c in my car.

Default Suggested source for used compressor

I have had good luck with a site called www.Car-part.com. I have gotten a used compressor from one of the places on that site. Have had no problems with it all. They all guarantee them for a period of time. Usually 90 days. If you don't have any problems within 90 days you generally won't have any problems. I was troubleshooting my 91 prelude and eventually found that the controll box had gone bad. Control box was disconnecting my compressor as if the controll box was sensing that the compressor was seizing but it was not. Good Luck :driving:
