well.. I don't know too much about preludes - just got one.. but I'll try to help. If I'm wrong, please correct me

the 3rd (89-91?) and 4th gen (92-96) preludes had an s, si, and vtec model. The s was the base model.. which came with hubcaps, less hp, etc. The si was better, and had alloys, with a bigger engine.. I believe around 127hp.. but a sohc engine. The vtec had the best engine and it was dohc with around 195hp I think. The 5th gen preludes (97-2001) only came in two models, the base, and the SH. They both have the same engine - dohc with around 200hp. The base came with alloys, and pretty much all the goodies, however the SH had slightly different wheels, weighed about 90 lbs more than the base, and had ATTS - which stands for automatic torque transfer system i believe - it helps the car handle better around turns at higher speeds from what i understand - and makes it better to race/more like rear wheel drive cars (as far as turning goes)

This is about all I know.. and like I said, i'm not sure it's even right, lol (please dont yell if it's not :-/) But I AM trying to learn, since I do have a prelude now. i liked them before, and now i figure i should try to learn more about them But one thing i AM sure of.. I have a 5th gen SH and I love it

You're mostly right And you did nail the main difference of the 5th gen SH, which is ATTS. There's some other small things like you said...wheels, standard rear spoiler, etc. The base 5th gen is the "S" (not a Type-S).

Things got a little mixed up when you were talking about 3rd and 4th gens though. The 88-91 models were S, 2.0Si, and Si, and topped out at 140hp for the Si. Beginning with 92, the 4th gens were offered in S, Si, and Si 4WS, with the Si at 160hp. Add the VTEC model for 1993-96 with 190hp. 4WS was dropped midway though the 4th gen's run.

Hope that helped.

When I bought my car, I tested both the base and the Type SH, and I could not tell any difference, at least not enough to justify the $3,000 price difference. Not to mention that the ATTS fluid needs to be changed I think every 30,000 miles, and the system would be super expensive to repair if it ever went bad. So I bought the base, added the factory spoiler, foglights, and leather shift knob with red stiching, and still came out $2,000 ahead before taxes. I will admit, however, I like the SH rims a little better, and I keep my eyes open for a set to go on sale if they come at a reasonable price.

P.S. The turning radius is actually LESS on the base (26.5 feet versus 27.3 for the SH)

there is a difference between the s prelude and the type s. The s is the standard 92-96 prelude, the type s was a japanese only prelude, think of it as the prelude type R, though it was called the type S, and the engine had ~220hp.

I drove both, and I could actually feel the difference in handling. Whether its 3000$ worth of handling is debateable. Besides ATTS and stiffer suspension, there is different front suspension geometry, no auto available, LED spoiler, painted bumper and side skirts, door lights, leather wrapped shift nob, different rims and a few minor things like slightly quicker steering ratio. Oh, if you live in Canada, you get leather heated seats.

Like I said, I added my accessories and still came out $2,000 ahead. And still can't justify the price difference. Now, if the Type SH came with traction control included in that price, that would be a different story.

I went for the SH when I bought my car because I wanted the best they had. At the time I was unaware of these web boards and I dont even think Quaife had a LSD availble at the time. Now I drive around with the ATTS light on becuase it trips every other week. I bought the extended warranty when I got the car but so far the sensors that are tripping the code are testing to be good.

Even though I'm not a fan of the problems with the ATTS when it's not working I know. The car has much more understeer and seems twitchy until I push it to the point of plowing. If I was going to buy a used lude I would NEVER buy the SH.

i think the turning radius on the prelude is horrible.. however, i just had a del sol, that could practically turn on a dime. i really do love my prelude.. i'm just not used to its hugeness yet, LOL and i always forget it has a back seat too, haha
