Trouble with Reverse on 5th Gen Lude
Not all the time, but most of the times, i have trouble putting my lude in reverse. I have to press the clutch in a few times before it goes. Does anyone have this problem?
try this:
if the car doesn't want to go into reverse. put the car in first and make the car go forward. it doesn't even have to roll just enough to make the car feel like its going forward. then try to put the car in reverse

I have the exact same problem! It gets annoying after a while. Mine does it everytime I put the car in reverse. I have to shift it back into first, let my foot off the clutch, and put it back into reverse.
i know the 5th gear shift fork was mismanufactured on some ludes namely 4th gens. off the top of my head im pretty sure that 5th/Rev are the same fork. so if that is the case then i guess the shift fork is the culprit. you can try to shim it but that is HIGHLY un-advisable. i took my tranny apart and cleaned it out not to long ago, and its not something you want to attempt if you have never dealt with engine building, the tranny is alot more complicated than the engine IMO.
if u are on a crusade...i heard of some LSD equiped trannys like the f20b and JDM ludes that dont have this issue, you can also put those in 1st gear at like 30 if u want. of course you should NEVER downshift into 1st gear anyway.

I recall from the early days of the 5th gen that there was a TSB or something for the shift fork, but I thought it was only for early 97's, and that eventually Honda incorporated the change into later model years. The part that fails would mess up the 5th gear shift, as the other poster mentioned.
I have had problems a couple of times (like grinding when I shift quickly), but when I had the fluid replaced with Honda MTF, it was much improved. Don't let the dealer just stick regular oil in it like they did with me once! (Just once!) I have it changed more often than what the owner's manual says (pretty much whenever it starts to act up). But sometimes, I still have trouble in reverse (although, not in a long while, knock on vinyl). In that case, I nearly always can get it after a "double clutch".
(I also usually get the valve adjustment done more often than required. Why not? Usually it runs better. Get the most out of what you have.)
