Default Catalytic converter

Engine light in the brother's car went on so he spent $70 for honda to diagnose the problem. Said it was the catalytic converter and wanted 900!!!! dollars to install a new one. He hung up after that and ran up there to get the car back before he got raped.

Anyways, I know there are cheaper alternatives. The car's tagged for the next 2 years so we don't really have to worry about emissions, so would a straight throught work or find a used or new oem replacement? Any thoughts?

Thanks, Mike

What year and engine? 9 times out of 10 when the check engine light goes on a Honda, it's the o2 sensor. Stock cat. converters last at least 150k. I'd advise him to get at least another opinion..... as for that price, that's rediculous, anyway because I've seen stock cats for late model Preludes as cheap as 300.00 but no more than 600.00.

From what I understand you can't do a straight pipe on the later H22's anyways because the O2 sensor is on the CAT, unless you want to get an engine managment system.

found a random tech cat for 212 + 11 for a gasket kit. At lightning motorsports. I think there's a cheaper place for the gaskets, but I still can't believe honda wanted 700 for that damn thing and 200 to install it. Any problems during the install? The only thing I'm guessing that'll be tough is jacking the car up and getting to it. Also I figure with 110K on it, it's rusted to sh1t so the bolts might be a pain. One more thing. Are the O2 sensors hooked into the cat or before and after it on the header and exhaust? Those are some pricey POS's too.

I see the straight pipes on ebay every once in a while. They are listed as test pipes. Some guy named mufflerbro or something is the one that sells them. He can make them for any car too if he doesn't already have what you are looking for. Otherwise just get a random or catco or find a stock one at the junkyard

It should go back into the stock location if you get a direct replacement cat. Of course the model specific direct replacements are more expensive than the weld on kind.
