42,000 still okay. Clutches should last to about 100k, even under some heavy usage - stock of course. If you have force-induction, the clutch should go sooner.

And yes auto clutches do break/wear out but usually it takes a little longer (its hard to drop the clutch while reving 5,000k - if you do I suspect your tranny will go before the clutch )

What is the clutch? Is it the thing that shifts the gears in the transmission? h: Also is there a difference in manual and auto clutch?

not a prelude but my friends 1991 integra LS is still on it's original clutch at over 200miles. still grips fine, no slippage at all.

my old 96' GTI VR6 with nearly 100K still on original clutch no slippage at all. this is the car I probably abused the most.

it all depends on how it's driven.

my old a$$ 88' subaru XT with only 100hp needed new clutch after 30K (i bought it used with 60K) and then another one after 35K. and I drove that thing like crazy. had to redline nearly everygear to get on the freeway

Preludes have a hydraulic clutch, so it should be able to maintain consitant pressure without adjustments. And the smoothness and solid fell of the clutch is one of the main points that sold me on the car to begin with. You should get at leat 100,000 miles out of it. I have 65,000 miles and it still feels like new. In fact, I just had new tires and my gearbox fluid and coolant changed (the only things you really need done at the 60,000 mile service) and the service tech who worked on my car was amazed at how sensitive the clutch is. He said he stalled a few times because the take up is different than most cluthes, which are just cable/spring operated. Those clutches have a definite hard spot where they take up. But getting back to how long it should last, two tips: never ride it, and don't drop it above 3,500 rpm. Ease into the gas as you let it out, THEN you can floor it into VTEC.

That's GM for ya. Before I really got into Hondas, I looked at getting a Z28. The clutch on the 6 speed was so chunky it felt like a big lump every time I let it out. I think the problem for the most part with GM manuals is that they really can't handle the massive amounts of torque even their V6's make. Honda had a problem with that with the Acura Legend in the mid 1990's. They were replacing clutches like crazy with less than 80,000 miles (trust me, if there are any major problems with Honda vehicles before 120,000 miles, they know they made a boo boo) Turned out the V6 in the Legend just had too much torque. So they quit offering a manual on ANY V6 (except NSX) untill they got it right.... this year's Acura 3.2 CL Type S and the new Accord EX V6 have completely redesigned six speed manuals with larger clutches. And GM just keeps on making theirs without any changes. Or they outsource them to another manufacturer. Instead the doing the right thing by halting them all together, totally redesigning them, then bring them back much better.
