i have a p72 and perhaps i can give some tips
if you are shooting that close you want to enable the macro function
and you should set the mode to the beach i think and center auto focus
lemme knwo how that works out?

You also should note what the minimum focusing distance is on that camera. Like Grifter said, setting it to macro mode will allow it to use the minimum distance. Some cameras just cant get that close.
