Oh no. An administration that listens to the input of the citizens and makes adjustments of policy to best suit the american public. How terrifying.

I believe its a good thing. The schools here required it a couple years ago and got rid of it for some reason. I think the idea of community and doing shit for more than yourself is disappearing. It needs to come back. It sucks that it would take a law for people to do volunteer work (which it really isnt since you get compensation.)

:dunno:

And if you're getting a publicly funded education, giving returns to the public and community that paid for you isn't that far out of line. If they required community service from private educational institutions, that would be crossing the line...

Good. People need to do more community service. In my high school in order to graduate you had to do a certain number of hours.

I had to do community service for religion class in HS (yeah, fun class). Otherwise you automatically failed the class. It was 40 hrs. if I remember correctly. I put in the hours over a few weekends at Salvation Army. I dreaded it at the time, but I think it was a good experience overall.

Just because they took out the word required doesn't mean it's not going to be.

Seriously, is 50 hours of bettering your community really that much to ask for, even if it was required? Most kids watch 25 hours of television in ONE week. I dont really see this as any different then sending your child to school. Sure they dont like it, but they learn from it and are glad they did it when they are older.

Sounds good for the community but really annoying for students.
