"Required"

You're doing that because you choose to. Give people the choice to earn the 4k that he says he's going to give.

Do not require it.
Werd its like he is changing the curriculum of public schools to include this useless community service. It would be like forcing the kids to take a course they dont want... thats absurd.

I'm happy this is what the republicans are bitching about... could be worst things to be unhappy about.

the world has seen shit like this before. I'm not sure what's more disturbing, the fact that it's so blatant or that people are so diluted that they can't see it.

History may not repeat it's self, but it sure does rhyme.

Yes. Depends on what you qualify as this though. Off the top of my head, I know Germany, Sweden, and Denmark have this for sure.

They use it as a substitute for people who can't do military service, or opt out of it. In other countries they have compulsory military service, but in off hours they are sometimes used for community service functions.

If I get bored, I could look up to see if there's other western countries that do this too.

I dont know if you changed the quote or if the website had changed, but when I go to the site it says:

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

I dont see the word "required" in there.

Nice.

They completely changed it. They took out "required" and added the part about the refundable tax credit.

i'd be fuckin' pissed if i had to do 100 hours of community service while in school.

in high school, we had to do some amount of community service for our government class. i played kickball and ctf with like third graders twice a week
