Advertisings Effects on Society
Came across this article on marketing sex to 8-12 year olds
http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/money/sexy/
it details something I've noticed heavily at the local mall, younger girls dressing what I would call slutty. Do you guys notice this in your area? the article attributes it to advertising, is that really fair?
Also what are you opinions on the premsie that advertising in general is detrimental to a captialist economy, because the biggest budget rather then the best product wins market share? Is there a positive side to "advertising" at all? Is it a necessary evil, and why?

I certainly don't feel very positive about advertising. I can't imagine how many forests are felled just to send everybody in the country Safeway coupons several times a week (most of which get thrown away).
And I feel the same way about marketing sex to 8-12 y/olds. I'm not religious or anything, but how much of a lowly sinner does some dude have to be to design and manufacture little padded bras for pre-teens?

Its simple, the marketers are finding a need and filling it. The 8-12 year olds want sexy clothing because they are mimicking what they see on tv. You shouldint be blaming the marketers but the tv personalities that that making those kids think they have to dress that way to be accepted.

I don't think TV personalities are to blame. They are doing their job. I agree that TV personalities may have an effect but the blame should fall on the parents. The advertising marketers are doing something immoral but after all that it is up to the parents and the kid, especially the parent.
Definitley agree that the parents are ultimatley responsible for their kids actions.
I'm curious, if the marketers are filling a need (for sexy clothes), aren't the tv personalities essentially doing the same thing ( filling the need for sexy fiction)? "need" here for lack of a better word. Also don't marketers generate around half of what's on tv, the commercials?
what really surprises me here is not the kids, who kinda should be expected to follow whatever trends they come across, but the clothing company that would want to be associated with this image, I would think they'd afraid of some public shaming.
