i believe 2006 in the US.

it's due out in UK end of 2005 so 2006 makes sense for US.

From looking at the new pic of the front of the car I can see that it has inherited the 7-series worst trait: the huge hood over the iDrive screen in the middle of the dash. Hopefully it'll be optional...

iDrive is optional on the 5-series from what I've come to read. It also has v.2.0, which is supposed to cause less headaches.

I think the problem lies in the convex shape of the dash. It curves out away from the base of the windshield so at the middle where the screen is placed the dash is also the deepest.

The Japanese seem to have a pretty good handle on where to put their in-dash LCD screens and Mercedes seems to have it figured out as well (aside from their needlessly clunky interface). Why BMW has to take up all the extra real estate makes no sense to me.

BMW also has the largest display so it requires more realestate.

Personally I also prefer the flip up nav screen on the Z4. Probably the only thing I like about that car.
